What each tool is for

• Straight scissors — length and finishing on flat areas.
• Curved, round-tipped scissors — the delicate zones: around the eyes, ears and paw pads. Round tips mean no puncture if your dog moves.
• Thinning shears — they take weight out without leaving a step. This is the tool that rescues a bad cut.
• Dual-spacing comb — wide teeth to detangle, fine teeth to check your work.

Why trim between appointments

Hair growing over the eyes blocks vision and causes irritation. Hair between the paw pads makes dogs slip on hard floors and traps mud and road salt. Both are simple 5-minute jobs every 3–4 weeks — no need to wait for the groomer.

Doing it without stressing your dog

1. Comb first. Never cut into a mat.
2. Always cut with the coat, in small passes. Three light passes beat one that's too short.
3. Keep the blades parallel to the skin, never pointing into it.
4. Stop before they do. Two short sessions beat one long one that ends badly.

Stainless steel with an adjustable tension screw. Wipe the blades after each use and store them in the case — that's what keeps the edge for years.
