Every nail contains a blood vessel and nerve called the quick. On clear nails it shows through as pink and you cut 2 mm short of it. On black nails it's completely invisible — you're cutting blind, and roughly one time in three you draw blood.
The LED shines through the nail so the dark mass of the quick becomes visible. It's the only simple fix for this.
