Why a comb, not just flea treatment
Topical and oral flea treatments kill fleas after they bite — a flea comb physically removes adults and eggs before that happens, and is the only way to actually confirm an infestation (comb over a white paper towel and look for what falls out).
How to check for fleas
- Comb through the coat, focusing on the base of the tail and neck.
- Wipe the comb on a damp white paper towel after each pass.
- Reddish-brown specks that turn red-brown on the wet towel are flea dirt (digested blood) — a positive sign even without seeing live fleas.
A flea comb is diagnostic and mechanical control, not a substitute for a vet-recommended preventive.
